San Diego Boca FC Finishes 1-1-1 in Group Play in U.S. Open Cup

Diego Boca FC missed advancing out of the first round of the U.S. Open Cup this weekend after a solid effort. Boca FC matched up against three solid teams, and emerged from group play with four points, which was good enough for second place, but missed qualifying for the knockout round because of goal differential.

San Diego Boca FC Head Coach Papo Santos said after the tournament, “We had a decent showing overall and we made important improvement after each game. The results are unfortunate, but at the end of the day, we need to remember that this is about building the San Diego Boca FC organization and the team. This is the first tournament that the team has played together, so there were good lessons learned.”

San Diego Boca FC faced off against NPSL Western Division rival Bay Area Ambassadors Friday afternoon at Cherry Island Soccer Complex. Boca FC suffered a tough 2-0 defeat to the Ambassadors and were simply outplayed. Unlike their league match, Boca FC was unable to convert on scoring opportunities, and made costly defensive mistakes, which led to Bay Area goals.

Saturday proved to be much better for Boca FC. In the morning match, Boca FC was pitted against the French Soccer Academy from Washington. Boca FC were able to play with a noticeably more organized defense. The Boca FC attack created many scoring opportunities, but they were simply unable to finish their chances. Both sides battled back and forth, as no team ever clearly held an advantage, and the match finished in a scoreless draw.

San Diego Boca FC continues the NPSL season when they return home to Helix High Soccer Stadium Saturday, June 5 to play the Bay Area Ambassadors for the final time this season. In the teams’ first match of the NPSL season, San Diego Boca FC stole three points from the Ambassadors at Bay Area’s home field in a 2-1 victory for the visiting side.
