Hannah Barresi scored the game-winning goal for the Poway Vaqueros GU18 in the first overtime period of the Cal South State Cup finals to beat out the Carlsbad Lightning GU18 Red, 2-1, in San Bernardino.
Brendan Kelly’s team outscored its opponents throughout the two weekends of State Cup competition, 7-3. Pool play and the elimination rounds featured four wins and one tie with games against Mike Forsythe's Bakersfield Brigade G90 Red (2-1), Steve Lincoln's Hotspurs USA (1-1), Malcolm Tovey's RSF Attack G90 Green (1-0), Peter Mastrocinque's Real So Cal Black (1-0) and Khaled Al-Shafie's Lightning (2-1).
Coaches Christine Drummond and Craig McGill took over coaching duties for the Vaqueros in the finals. Poway found itself down by one goal at the half. In the second half, the Vaqueros received a free kick from a foul call. Sydney Nicholas took the free kick that was placed on the half line; her shot bounced in front of Lightning’s keeper and then over the goalie’s head and into the goal, tying the game at 1-1. No other goals were scored in regulation.
The game went into two 15-minute overtime periods, where Barresi’s goal in the first period stuck. No goals were scored in the second 15-minute overtime period.
