The
Hotspurs GU15 Red squad reach the finals of the
Poway Country Shootout this weekend before falling to
FC San Diego in the championship game, 2-1.
The Hotspurs and FC San Diego are familiar foes, having split two season games during the previous year. The Hotspurs went ahead early in the finals with
Brooke scoring off a well-played cross by
Ashley.
The Hotspurs played a spirited first half with
Sierra,
Erika,
Lindsay and
Brittney playing solid defense in front of GK
Danen. At midfield,
Natalie,
Kayla, Brooke, Ashley and
Catalina controlled the game and were quick in starting dangerous attack on the wings.
Lauren,
Callie, Jayda and
Lexi split time at forward, mixing speed and technique to keep the FC San Diego defense on its toes throughout the game.
FC San Diego gradually took control of the game in the second half and started pressuring the Hotspurs defense. Nonetheless, the Hotspurs remained dangerous with some counterattacks and Brooke hit the post with a wicked left-footed shot. With five minutes to go, just when it looked that Hotspurs could secure their fourth consecutive shutout, FC San Diego tied the game. Then, at the last minute, FC San Diego scored the game-winning goal.
The Hotspurs reached the finals by posted a 3-0 win over the
Poway Vaqueros, a 3-0 victory against
Albion Red and a 6-0 triumph versus the
Matrix Strikers.
The Hotspurs entered the tournament to get a good workout and help the new players integrate in the group. Coach
Matt Barns was missing three returning players due to injuries and welcomed the help of old friend Callie from the sister GU16 team.
