Coach Evan Camperell gears up for his third season with the MiraCosta College men’s soccer team, a program he developed in 2007. Camperell is currently conducting tryouts for the new season and is excited about what the prospective athletes will bring to the table, as well the core group of returning sophomores. XKSD caught up with Coach Camperell to hear about what he has in-store for the new season.
XK San Diego: How did you develop the men’s soccer program at MiraCosta and why did you undertake that challenge?
Evan Camperell: I started the program in 2007 and wanted to take on the challenge because I am a local to North County. I believe the area has produced a lot of quality players and it is exciting to give them a local college option. I have developed the men’s program through solid recruiting efforts. I have tapped into the club and high school scenes to build our teams.
XK: What impressed you most about the team last season?
EC: The team chemistry was excellent. This is the most important building block of a new program like ours. Also, the team responded will after some tough losses by winning some very exciting games, including a 1-0 win against Palomar College.
XK: Are there any recruits you are really excited about?
EC: I am excited about all of our new prospective athletes. It will be exciting to see what each of them brings to the table.
XK: What do you look for in an incoming player?
EC: Strong academic ability, technical and tactical ability and a desire to be part of something bigger than just one's self.
XK: How would you convince a player considering playing for a CC to choose your program as opposed to the other San Diego programs?
EC: They have to want to be at our college. It is important that the individual knows where they are going and what they are getting themselves into.
XK: What is the commitment level like for the team?
EC: For the most part, the players are very committed. They want to improve as individual players and they also want to help the team achieve as much as possible to be successful.
XK: What are some of the team’s bonding experiences off the field?
EC: We take a trip to Arizona during the preseason to participate in two exhibition games with four-year universities, Embry-Riddle and Southwestern College. This is a great bonding experience for the team.
XK: What are your goals for the upcoming season?
EC: I want to build off of our solid team chemistry from last season. The two main goals for us will be to have a winning record and to qualify for the postseason state championship tournament.
