Seven months of rehab from four torn ligaments and a strained tendon suffered in her first collegiate match wasn’t exactly how Mission Hills HS alum Katie Taylor envisioned her debut with Texas Christian University. The fateful contest was against the University of Texas.

As a defender, Taylor blocked a ball with the outside of her foot and then landed on it. She underwent a scope in December and now has to tape her ankle every time she plays, but it’s a small price to pay for the rewards she gets when back on the field.

“Starting in my first college match was different then playing club, by far,” Taylor said. “However, I wasn't as nervous as I expected. For me, all I have to do is touch the ball once and then I'll be OK. It was a fun experience to hear my name announced over the loud speaker.”

After playing during the spring, Taylor will continue in the fall.

”Some of my goals this next season are not to get hurt,” Taylor said. “Another is, as a team, to win more conference games and not to lose in overtime. Next season will be a good one for us because, as a team, we are becoming closer and the chemistry is building. We are becoming fewer individuals and more of a team.”

Also on the TCU squad is fellow Escondido native and high school rival Lizzy Karoly (San Pasqual HS). The two often went head-to-head in the Valley Leauge. Karoly was entering her sophomore year when Taylor was a freshman.

“I would say that it helped me transition, but it is a lot of fun to have another girl from where I am from on the team,” Taylor said. “We have a lot in common from being from the same city. [Lizzy] is a great girl and I am glad that I am on the team with her.”

Taylor cites southern hospitality as one of the reasons she originally chose TCU. When she visited, the kindness she received from everyone on and off campus was generous. The school also offered her a Criminal Justice major with a minor in Psychology.
