The Hotspurs G15 Red squad pulled out a 1-1 victory (3-1 PKs) over Los Gauchos in the finals of the Hotspurs Labor Day Tournament on Monday. The Hotspurs team -- which finally broke through to win its first tournament of the summer after a few near misses -- keeps getting more consistent, confident and experienced, which showed in the finals.
After beating So Cal Rush Nike in a tough semifinal game on Sunday, 2-1, the Hotspurs faced a physical Gauchos team on Monday. The game was exactly the way it was expected, with Gauchos providing several physical challenges and the Hotspurs responding to match the intensity.
Hotspurs coach Matt Barns and assistant Gary Hyvonen prepared the girls for this type of game and the team never got frustrated by the physical punishment. Danen was steady as usual in goal; Sierrah, Erika, Lexi and Natalie controlled the middle; and Brenna, Brook, Catalina and Ashley provided width and depth with great runs.
The Hotspurs took a 1-0 lead and seemed poised to control the game till the end, but with a little more than five minutes to go Gauchos tied the match in a scramble after a corner kick. The Hotspurs poured on a series of final attacks, but the game was to be decided in PKs.
Gauchos converted only one of its PKs while Catalina, Lexi and Jayda scored for the Hotspurs to give the team the tournament championship well.
