The USD men's soccer team upended the Wisconsin Badgers, 3-0, in a hard-fought battle at Torero Stadium on Friday night. In a whirlwind opening 20 minutes, the Toreros laid siege to the the Wisconsin goal but no goal was forthcoming. Efforts by Stephen Posa, Patrick Wallen and Marcelo Caminetti were all thwarted by the exceptional play of Wisconsin's keeper, Alex Horwath.
As the half wore on, the Badgers started to assert themselves and senior goalkeeper Kelin Briones pulled off a couple of clutch saves to keep the score at zeros. The turning point occurred at the 41st minute of the first half when Wisconsin's Pablo Delgado handled a goal-bound header from Corey Norris and was issued a red card. Senior J.T. Howlan netted from the penalty spot and USD was on its way.
The second half produced a fierce up-tempo pace as Wisconsin tested the USD defense despite being a man down. At the 71st minute of the game, Posa put the game out of reach with a calm finish after great approach play by Wallen and sophomore Charles Blase. The final goal was a fine glancing header from senior Kyle Ochoa of a nice feed from Blase.
"Being 3-0 is a nice way to start the season, but the big picture is to be ready for conference as all of our opponents in the WCC (West Coast Conference) have quality and will put you to the sword if you have an off night," said Coach Seamus McFadden. "I am pleased with the defense as that's now 270 minutes without a goal conceded and there is a real collective pride within the team to keep this streak going."
