Chivas USA Notes (1-0 loss ‘@’ LA Galaxy (3-2 loss on aggregate))
--Chivas USA’s 2009 season came to a close with a 1-0 loss against the LA Galaxy in Sunday evening’s Playoff Super Clásico, with a 3-2 overall score between the two legs of the ‘home-and-home’ series. Landon Donovan scored a penalty kick for the game’s only goal in the 73rd minute.
--Goalkeeper Zach Thornton made five saves in the match, including several stellar stops, but could not keep Donovan’s penalty out after a Yamith Cuesta foul on Mike Magee in the box. The Red-and-White had several chances in the closing minutes of the game but were unable to find the equalizer.
--The match, which was a home game for the LA Galaxy, followed last week’s first leg, in which Maykel Galindo and Maicon Santos scored for Chivas USA in the team’s home game, a 2-2 draw in front of 25,218 at The Home Depot Center.
--The Red-and-White finished their fifth MLS season, once again owning one of the top records in the league. After a 13-11-6 regular season record, good for 45 points, Chivas USA made the MLS Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Since 2006, the Red-and-White have the third-best record in all of MLS, with more points in those four seasons (184) than any team other than Houston (194) and D.C. United (186).
--Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on Sunday’s match: “It was disappointing because the Galaxy makes one play and really, we don’t have a chance to score again. Give them credit… they made one play and they won the game and they are going to the next round.”
