TVSA Hawks BU18 coach Omar Benjoud dishes with XK San Diego about playing soccer in Morocco, moving to the United States and pumping up his players during halftime.
XKSD: Tell us one thing not many people know about you.
OJ: I speak four languages: Arabic, French, English and Spanish.
XKSD: Who is your favorite athlete? Favorite sports team?
OJ: Thierry Henry, Arsenal.
XKSD: Tell us about your playing experience.
OJ: I played in Club Sportif du Kenitra, "KAC," in Morocco since I was 16 years old. I stopped when I was 20 to finish my schooling. In 1989, I moved to the United States. I played forward.
XKSD: What made you start coaching?
OJ: In 2000, I was asked to volunteer in helping the soccer program in Fallbrook and have been coaching since then.
XKSD: How would you describe your coaching style?
OJ: I am an intense coach. I use my experience as a player to teach the players. I demand hard work and discipline.
XKSD: What kinds of skills do you teach your players during practices?
OJ: Since I coach BU18, I teach more tactics of the game, switching the game from defense to offense, how to defend and finishing.
XKSD: What do you tell your players at halftime of a game?
OJ: It is more about adjustments. If we are winning we talk about how to keep up the good work and correct the mistakes that will cost us. When we are losing, it’s more about the feedback from the players and what we are not executing to have the team attacking us more.
XKSD: What is your greatest accomplishment?
OJ: To have players and parents who look up to me.
