Coach Brian Quinn's FC San Diego B92 Gold captured its third straight title in Presidio League play, this time taking down the BU19 Premier Elite bracket.

San Diego clinched the bracket title with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Arsenal on Saturday in the bracket-play finale and now eyes the always-tough State and Surf Cup tournaments.

“We chose to play a year up this year so it can get us ready for the Surf Cup and the State Cup tournaments,” FCSD Assistant Coach Mark Connelly said. “We came to play and to win. We knew it would be difficult and challenging, but we met that challenge head on.”

The core group of the FC San Diego squad has been playing together since they were seven and eight-years old. Nothing has rattled the team, including being down 2-0 early in the game against Arsenal. A lost would have cost them the title.

“This is a special group of boys, where anytime there is a question of doubt or their backs are against the wall, they respond,” Connelly said. “They definitely have a good amount of dogfight in them, and they know how to go the distance and close out the game,”

It didn’t take long for the Sockers to respond to the two-goal deficit. Moments after Arsenal scored its second goal of the first half, FCSD went on a three-goal flurry to end the half with a 3-2 lead.

Rey Sembwa, Kevin Meyer and Dallin Cutler each had goals to help propel FCSD into the lead. It was only a matter of time before Sockers would strike, as the offense has generated 40 goals this season.

The road to the bracket title was in no way a smooth one. FCSD had to deal with player injuries and card suspensions in the second half of the year. At one point, FCSD's18-man roster was down to just 13 eligible players.

“The last three or four games we were down to 13 players off an 18-man roster,” Connelly said. “So it became a testament of will and the depth of the team. That is what we have on this team.”
