California placed 11 Golden Bears on the Pac-10 All-Academic Teams, with leading scorer and All-Pac-10 first-team junior forward Andrew Wiedeman leading the way with a spot on the first team.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
This is the second conference academic honor for Wiedeman, a social welfare major with a 3.45 GPA. Last season he earned a spot on the second team. This season, Wiedeman earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team after first claiming a berth on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Team. Wiedeman was named to three important preseason award lists - the Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy and the preseason All-America teams for Soccer America and College Soccer News.
Four Bears - sophomore defender Ted Jones, junior midfielders Hector Jimenez and Davis Paul and senior defender Evan Sassano - claimed spots on the second team. This marks the second-straight second-team selection for Jimenez, the Pac-10 assist leader (9) who joined Wiedeman on the All-Pac-10 first team. Sassano also earned Pac-10 All-Academic second-team status in 2007, while Paul was an honorable mention all-academic pick in 2008.
Six Bears - junior midfielder Servando Carrasco, senior defender Imaan Kerchgani, sophomore forward Mike Munoz, junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy, junior defender A.J. Soares and senior defender Jacob Wilson earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention. Carrasco was a second-team pick last year, while Kerchgani, Omphroy, Soares and Wilson repeated their 2008 honorable-mention accolades. Soares also earned a spot on the 2009 All-Pac-10 first team, Carrasco was second-team All-Pac-10 and Wilson claimed All-Pac-10 honorable mention. |
