| Rossi's Girls Cap Undefeated Season |

Gary Rossi proposed his PQ Premier GU16 Black (8-0-2) could finish their season undefeated after the girls clinched the AA-A South bracket title in the ninth game of the season. Now that league games have ended, Rossi’s girls have met that goal. The team finished up its season after defeating Matrix-El Cajon, 2-0, this past Saturday, Nov. 21.
Jessica Hammarlund opened the match in the fourth minute to give PQ a 1-0 lead. Hammarlund gathered a pass down the right touch-line to outrun a Matrix defender before landing her shot between the right post and a Matrix goalkeeper. The goal was Hammarlund's third of the season.
Just before time expired in the first half, Kimi Mendiola topped off PQ’s scoring for the day as she capitalized on a Matrix clear that came her way to strike the ball into the right corner of the goal. Mendiola leads the team with five goals this season.
The duration of the half, forwards Virginia Stanton, Lexi Russell and Julia Ricci pressured the El Cajon defense. PQ midfielders Ashley Oross, Alexia Carrasco and Madison Chapman supported their teammates up the field.
In the back, defenders Kaitlyn Cardenas, Irma Acuna, Abbi Bagsic and Emily Myers -- as well as a split sweeper duty between Mendiola and Ricci -- continually turned back numerous Matrix goal-scoring opportunities. PQ goalkeeper Gabby Flud also contained the Matrix offense as she made four saves for her third-straight second-half shutout.
With an undefeated championship title, Rossi’s girls will continue their soccer season at their respective high schools such as Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Chula Vista.
