| Poway Plows Through Rotary Cup |

The Poway Vaqueros did a good job of holding off Encinitas Express in the GU-10 Gold division championship.

A hat trick wasn’t enough to describe Janelle Bernal’s offensive attack for her Poway Vaqueros team in the Encinitas Rotary Cup GU-10 Gold championship game against the Encinitas Express. Bernal barreled in four goals and -- with the help of fellow scorers Christine Millay and Brennan Sieber -- closed out a 6-0 victory.
An intense, well-disciplined Vaqueros team provided plenty of offense and a punishing defense to earn the tournament title. Coach Christine Drummond led the Poway crew as it played with great intensity and teamwork, controlling the field throughout the game. Taylor Kammerer, Cathleen Meyer and Isabella Bullock all had strong performances. The Poway attack featured crisp passing and an excellent ability by the entire team to control the ball. Also playing key rolls in the win were Vanessa Dee, Rachel Runnalls, Nichole Tabarez, Sara Vandenburgh and Amanda Zemper.
One of the highlights of the game was watching Encinitas Express keeper Brooke Russell fend off a relentless attack. Russell made a number of notable saves and impressed onlookers with her gritty determination and athleticism.
Encinitas mounted several offensive charges but was rebuffed by a strong Poway defense. Kathleen Cornell, Hope McQueen and Rachell Ullrich stood out for their hustle and competitive spirit for Encinitas. Jillian Brandon contributed several impressive defensive plays, as well.
